Samuel Walker introduces his book on Harry Truman and the use of the atomic bombs against Japan is multi-fold. Walker leads off by reminding his readers of the often heated historical debate around the subject into which he found himself drawn in to as an undergraduate student. This debate as Walker notes has been going on since the fateful decision to drop the bombs was made. The debate as noted by Walker has been made clearer with the release of new information - especially that of the Japanese government. For Walker the historical debate centers around the background factors that encouraged the use of the atomic bombs, and those that failed to ultimately constrain their use. Walker introduces his book as one meant to not only to delve deeply into the reasons for using the atomic bombs on Japan, but one meant to remain easy to read, understand and comprehend with full background knowledge built around proper historiography. Walker spends much time letting the reader come to grips with the man who had to make the decision in Harry Truman, the state of the nation after the sneak attack at Pearl Harbor, world politics growing from a sense of what was coming after the war with the emerging power that was the Soviet Union, and the truths and falsehoods that have grown in the public realm since the dropping of the bombs in 1945. But more than that, Walker quickly tries to dispel what he calls the myth of decision making around the decision to drop the bomb. To that end Walker writes, "In fact, however, Truman never faced a categorical choice between the bomb and an invasion that would cost hundreds of thousands of American lives." Walker throughout his book does take the U.S. president Harry Truman to task - both for his failings and for his ability to do what needed to be done. Truman of course was thrust into his position as Walker notes with little to no real knowledge of what was really going on with the U.S. war effort - especially that around the secret Manhattan Project. As Walker notes, "When Truman became president… he was very unsure of himself and his abilities." Truman was presented with a country still at war and teetering on depression, tiring of war, and increasingly at odds with their ally in the Soviet Union. It was in this air that Truman was expected to make his decisions.
